It would be a great feature accessability-wise if users could adjust font sizes and perhaps enable a high-contrast mode.
These are typical features that web browsers have, but our users who not very tech-savvy have had troubles finding and using these features when these are not included in Howspace itself.
Maybe contrast controls would make dark mode a possibility too? :)
I'm not sure how I feel about this feature. Teach a man how to fish, instead of giving a fish type of thing. People with visual impairment or just poor visual perception should really learn how to increase font size - instead of every possible web service on the world adding font size options.
We have played with the idea of dark modes, but the extra layer it adds for workspace admins for visual management felt like it wasn't worth it. It is next to impossible to make automatic with nice results.
Anyways, I agree that the problem is real (not all users know how to change font scaling on operating system or in browser even).
Thanks for your reply, Antti!
I get where you're coming from, and I agree with the principle. One of our goals is to theach basic digital skills to our users, this being one of them.
Why I suggested this - we were discussing accessability with out admins and it seems that site-based font adjustment is more in the spirit of WCAG guidelines ( https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Understanding/resize-text.html )
That being said, Howspace scales very well with browsed-based font adjustment, so I wouldn't say this is urgent in any way.
I guess dark mode would require admins to design another set of widget styles to match with a darker background? If this were an option, I would gladly do this. Maybe dark mode could a workspace-level feature, that admins could activate if wanted? That way it could be used by those who are willing and able to put in the extra effort without affecting the others.
For WCAG 2.1 article is mostly about client (= browser & device) based resize and zoom tools and how they should work and that is also where our focus is. Adding own buttons are third option there and even WCAG itself doesn't have those controls on their website. Thanks for your kind of words - we take accessibility seriously here and for example we test zoom up to 400%.
I guess dark mode would require admins to design another set of widget styles to match with a darker background?
Each widget would need a dark mode counterpart and same with rest of the color settings, backgrounds and logos. I think the visual editor would need "dark mode toggle", which then would at the first time try to create those styles automatically, but then you could tweak those.
That would be nice thing to have, but we haven't heard that much requests for it (this is first from customers - I know we devs would love to have it). Would it be ok for you if I rename this idea as "dark and contrast mode support for visuals" so it is easier to reference if moving forward?
Contrast mode I think could be system level "design" that couldn't be altered.
Yes, renaming is totally ok for me - we can put the font thing to rest.
We have had a couple of requests for dark mode - or rather questions if it would be possible. I'm in the same boat regarding the necessity of it; I for one would love to have it, and I think some users would utilize if it were an option, but at the end of the day I'm not sure how big the demand for it would be.
We are very early in our development with Howspace, though, so this is mostly based on my gut feeling.
We love fresh eyes, so keep all the ideas coming! Also the small things that make you stop and start wondering "what does this do" and you cannot figure it out without testing.
I will rename this to "Support dark mode and contrast mode for visuals".
